Message From Josh Byrnes – OMU General Manager Wed, 17 Aug 2016 19:04:36 +0000 jb

OMU has a strong reputation and rich history of being a progressive utility.  During our 75 years of existence we created three departments within our municipality: Gas / Electric / Telecom.

In addition to the three respected departments, OMU is known for being the leader of implementing energy conservation programs.  Most recently OMU has begun creating a renewable energy portfolio that consists of wind and solar.  OMU currently owns and operates a 1.5MW GE wind turbine and is in the process of constructing a 768kW community solar photovoltaic array.

OMU is a strong believer in community engagement and economic development.  OMU has loaned out grant money for economic development in Mitchell County through a revolving loan fund.  The OMU “More Cents” program provides funding for those seeking funding for community projects.   In addition to work with business start-ups, OMU has been working on connecting Osage globally through fiber to the home projects.

One of the greatest assets OMU brings to the table, is our knowledgeable group of employees within each department.  Whether your internet quits, lights go off, or you smell gas, we have service techs on call 24/7 and ready to serve.

We want to hear from you! I encourage you to email or call me at any time with your questions, comments, and concerns.  OMU has been around since 1941 and we look forward to serving the residents of Osage for many more decades to come.

Yours in OMU,

Josh Byrnes, General Manager

Spring Sun Outages Tue, 16 Feb 2016 21:09:16 +0000 Solar interference affects TV services twice a year during February/March and September/October.

The arc of the sun crosses the Earth’s equator and traces a line that places it directly behind the satellites from which much of our video programming is downloaded. The sun radiates across the entire frequency spectrum including the microwave frequencies used by the satellites. This causes a phenomenon known as a solar transit fade, or sun outage. The exact date, time and duration of such disruptions depends on several factors like the location of the receiver, the satellite in question and the size of the receiving dish.

During the solar interference window, there may be brief interruptions on a number of TV channels due to the alignment of the sun and satellites. The effects may be seen on most channels and will occur during various times of the day. All satellite and cable television providers in the northern hemisphere experience sun outages during the same periods.

Approximate times for spring 2016 sun outages in our area are March 1 – March 4 between 1:45 pm and 3:45 pm.
